da Vinci: The Art of Illusion

Study_old_manPROFILE OF AN OLD MAN:  Leonardo da Vinci

Just in case you missed this very special illusion from my August 2007 archives, it bares repeating.

Sit back and tilt your head just slightly to the left staring intently at the corner of the old man's mouth.

Suddenly the chin of the old man appears as the large round nose of another face.  See it?

Prof_of_an_old_man_ol_faceThe illusion of a hidden face with eyes and mouth outlined in white.  There are many, many more hidden images and amazing illusions lurking within this sketch.  Can you find them?

DA VINCI CODE OR ILLUSION?

Groteque_old_woman_bw_crp_face_1_2SKETCH:  Leonardo da Vinci

How many different faces do you see in this sketch?  I see at least 3 different caricature faces.  From a distance I first see a large caricature face turned slightly to the left with eyes closed.

Groteque_old_woman_bw_crop_face_3A second caricature face here.

Groteque_old_woman_bw_crp_face_2And a third caricature face here.

Throughout my site I've attempted to share an amazing discovery found within Leonardo da Vinci's works of art seen very easily by simply viewing his work from a distance and from different angles.  The images seen above are all found by simply flipping the sketch upside down and reversing the image.  If you know much at all about Leonardo da Vinci, you know of his unique style of "mirror writing" requiring viewers to hold his writing up in front of a mirror in order to decipher his hand writing; so, isn't it logical to apply this same technique to his works of art?

Groteque_old_woman_bw_3Upside down, reversed view of the entire sketch.  If you keep staring at this sketch from different distances and angles (try tilting your head from one side then the other) you should begin to notice many more distinct hidden images found all over this sketch.

Groteque_old_woman_bw_usd_cat_ol What appears to look like the face of a cat outlined in green.

Groteque_old_woman_bw_usd_r_ol What has come to be known as "the infamous letter R" I keep finding hidden within so many of da Vinci's works of art.

Here is the actual sketch you've been viewing:

Groteque_old_woman_3PORTRAIT OF A GROTESQUE OLD WOMAN:  Leonardo da Vinci       Red Chalk on paper.

Royal Collection - Drawings, Watercolours and Pastels

Groteque_old_woman_bw_2Reversed image with color removed.  (Removing color isn't necessary, but some may find it helps.)  One of the first things I see, in this reversed view, are what appear as distinct numbers and/or letters.

Groteque_old_woman_bw_32_olThe number 3 and 2 outlined in green and a possible number 5 or the letter S shown in the ear, though that could be a simple common anomally, but the 3 and 2 seem very deliberate.  Don't they?

In addition to the many hidden images I've pointed out so far there are many far more amazing optical illusions of images skillfully hidden within this sketch.  They can take a little more practice to find and if you're new to my site you may want to stick to the more basic or simple "art of illusion' that I examine throughout my site before you try this more complex "art of illusion."

For those of you who have completely grasped the concept of da Vinci's more complex illusions I'm sure you'll find this sketch particularly enjoyable and challenging.

Here are a few more angles and remember to try viewing from different distances as well.

With lighting enhanced.  Can you find more hidden images? Hint: The longer you stare at this sketch you'll notice that faint background images begin to grow darker and more distinct revealing hidden images not seen otherwise.

Portrait_of_an_old_man_full_view__3Small bearded face outlined.

Portrait_of_an_old_man_4th_face_olSmiling face.

Portrait_of_an_old_man_face_5_olAnother face outlined with the mouth on the left side.

Portrait_of_an_old_man_full_face__2 Face looking to the right outlined.  Are you seeing them?  You should also begin seeing distinct letters and numbers.

Portrait_of_an_old_man_full_r_olWhat has become known on my site as the "infamous letter R" (hidden within so many of da Vinci's works) outlined.

The hidden faces, numbers and letters are too numerous to even begin to try and outline.  It is also difficult to try and outline ALL the images because they form and fade from one faint image into another to another and so on.  Also, when you think you've found all the hidden images possible try coming back later and you'll be amazed at the number of new images you hadn't noticed before.

Then change your viewing angle...

Portrait_of_an_old_man_usd_crp_2_2Upside down, cropped section with lighting darkened to hopefully enable you to see the hidden images much faster and easier.  Again for those of you short on time and patience I've outlined a few below.

Leonardo da Vinci: The Simple Art of Illusion

Caricature CARICATURE:  LEONARDO DA VINCI

This is an extremely easy illusion of hidden images found within Leonardo da Vinci's works of art.

Caricature_close_upWith a closer look, do you see any additional faces?  Thoughout my site I've shown you many examples of this particular simple illusion found within Leonardo da Vinci's drawings and sketches.  A seemingly endless array of hidden images found easily once you know how and what to look for.

Caricature_eyes_ol Sit back and stare at the area, where the two dots are, in the close up above.  Suddenly two eyes come into focus revealing a second face.

Caricature_face_olA third face outlined.

Caricature_crp_face_2Close up of the third face.

Caricature_lt_a With color adjustment, try staring at one spot in the backgound and slowly hidden images slowly begin to appear darker and clearer!

Caricature_close_up_rotRotated view.  Sit back and give it a little time.  See any new images?

Caricature_rot_eRotated with lighting enhanced.  Every new angle, every lighting adjustment reveals more and more hidden images!  If you'll just give it time.

Profile_of_a_bald_man_bwPROFILE OF A BALD MAN:  LEONARDO DA VINCI.

Can you find the many other faces cleverly hidden within this sketch?

First give this small size, but full view of the sketch a good look.  Try tilting your head to the left.  Then to the right.  Also I tend to see some of the best illusions of faces if I back away from the sketch, even standing a few feet away and from different angles to my computer screen.  Are you seeing them?  Just as you catch sight of a new face it suddenly seems to emerge and form into another face then another.   It really is incredibly fascinating!

Profile_of_a_bald_man_bw_face_ol_2    If you're new to my site, WELCOME!  You may need a little practice to start seeing what seems like an endless array of hidden images and illusions throughout DA VINCI'S entire body of work.  I encourage you to take it on step or at least one work of art at a time.  If you have trouble grasping the concept of an illusion or to understand the style of hidden image you're looking for within a particular work of art take a minute to read the accompanying tips.

This is a relatively easy illusion and if you enjoy the thrill of discovery avoid my close ups and outlining, but I PROMISE YOU I haven't come close to outlining or finding everything.  I still discover something new every time I look at any of these.  Here are more examples:

Profile_of_a_bald_man_bw_crp_face_2Left profile big nose cartoon style face.  Tilt your head to the left.  The bald man's chin becomes the large nose of a second face.  See it?

Profile_of_a_bald_man_bw_crp_part_fThere are several hidden faces here. See the smiling face upper left hand corner?

DA VINCI: OPTICAL ILLUSIONS REVEAL HIDDEN IMAGES

Study_old_manPROFILE OF OLD MAN:  LEONARDO DA VINCI

Imagine that you discovered a secret museum full of never seen before master pieces!  Wouldn't you be eager to share such a discovery with the world?  Well, I feel as though I have made such a discovery. Only all of these hidden master pieces have been sitting right in front of us for centuries!

If you're new to my site, TIME, DISTANCE, ANGLES and PATIENCE are a MUST!  Throughout my site I speak of the "Hologram Effect" as well as a variety of "Illusions" skillfully created and mastered by Leonardo da Vinci.  As with any basic hologram it is impossible to see all the images at one time and as you will begin to see  Leonardo has layered images upon images which intertwine and merge forming one hidden image after another.  It can take some time to begin seeing them clearly on your own so, I've utilize lighting, contrasting, color, etc. to try and capture some of these amazing hidden images for you.  But let me state very clearly that NO SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY IS NEEDED TO SEE THESE HIDDEN IMAGES!  They can be seen clearly with the naked eye if you're simply willing to look for them in a slightly different way.

I highly recommend viewing art work from different angles and distances and I cannot stress the value of a mirror placed at a right angle to the left or right of your computer screen to help you view from slightly different angles.  Anyone who's ever read much about da Vinci, knows he had a thing about mirrors!  The larger the image, the further you should try viewing from, in order to see the larger hidden images and illusions begin to emerge.  The different techniques used by da Vinci can vary from drawing to drawing and  from his paintings as well.  And, as you're about to see, da Vinci sometimes combines many different "illusions" within one single work of art.

Leonardo da Vinci:  THE ART OF ILLUSION

Old_man_2 In this "Study Of A Profile Of An Old Man" if you sit back from your computer screen and really focus on different areas of this sketch you'll begin to notice many hidden images lurking in this drawing!  For instance, there on the neck area...

Face_on_neck_ol ...as outlined here, doesn't that look like a face with realy large lips?

Gorilla_ol Another face.

Old_man_3 Keep looking!

2nd_old_man_olProfile of another old man.

Ape_wide_mouth_olGorilla with mounth stretched wide opened.

Baby_ape_ol_2Stare where the two dots are, see the face with it's mouth wide opened.

Prof_of_an_old_manFor a truly awesome illusion: Sit back and tilt your head just slightly to the left staring at the corner of the old man's mouth.  Suddenly the old man's chin appears as the large round nose of an entirely new face!

Prof_of_an_old_man_face_olNew face outlined.

Also, try placing a mirror at a right angle to your computer screen and then stare into the mirror at this sketch right between the eye and ear and be sure to allow a little more distance for the larger image of this sketch. Then just keep staring. You will not believe the incredible illusion you will see take place right before your own eyes!  Hopefully you'll see another face with it's mouth opened as shown below**.

And keep looking, slowly shifting your focus to new areas, trying different angles and then place the mirror on the left side and start all over!

Prof_of_an_old_man_left_prf_olLeft profile outlined.

Prof_of_an_old_man_emb_color_19*Utilizing bump map imaging, which is basically moving the lighting around to emphasize different areas of the sketch lending an embossed or 3 dimensional effect, may help you to see even more illusions of hidden images.

Prof_old_man_bmp_face_wo**Using a white out effect another face appears.

Prof_of_an_old_man_face_mouth_ope_2*Face with it's mouth opened outlined.

Prof_of_an_old_man_emb_part_face__2*Face of a man with a long white beard and mustache outlined.

Prof_of_an_old_man_animal_mouth_ope*Head of an animal with it's mouth opened outlined.  There are so many illusions of hidden faces within this sketch.  I hope you're beginning to see them too!

Study_old_ma3_dk_bb_crp_animalClose up of the face on the old man's neck.  See it now?  The closer or further away you get amazingly all new images begin to take shape right before your eyes.  If you'll just give it time!

Study_old_man_dk_a_2Focus on the white area just behind his mouth.

Old_man_profile_3_crp_faceCloser view.  Notice the eye just in front of the ear.

Old_man_crp_face_wo_3Using a whiteout effect to separate the images, it looks like the profile of an ape with his mouth streched wide open.

Ape_woAnd here the lower half begins to look like a baboon.  I realize some may call "foul" at my using a white or blackout effect, but it's only to help separate all the images.  After you know what to look for you won't need any assistance.

Study_old_man_4_rot_snakes_blueUpside down with color enhanced.  Right click for larger views.  Do you see the SNAKES on his neck?  One right under his chin.

Study_old_man_4_rot_snakes_blue_c_3 Rotated, closer view of snakes.  I find most people will keep getting closer and closer to their computer screens, but you can usually see more if you view from a bit of a distance and give this amazing illusion just a moment of your time.

Study_old_man_4_rot_snakes_crp_rot_Lighter view of snakes.

Lg_old_man_crp_dk_snakes_2With lighting darkened more snakes are revealed.

Try tilting your head to one side then the other and just keep staring.

Old_man_profile_3_crp_face_arrow_2Notice the eye outlined, try focusing on it in the next cropped section.

Old_man_profile_2_crp_face_3_2Sit back stare intently.  Do you see a face looking to the left with it's mouth opened?  If you give yourself enough distance the entire eye area begins to look like an opened mouth...  Keep staring the images keep changing!

Old_man_dk Hopefully some of these lighting adjustments will help you begin to see some of the many hidden images within this sketch.

Profile_of_an_old_man_2_2 A few close ups.

Profile_of_an_old_man_3

As with most of DA VINCI'S art, I see something new every time I look at it.

Old_man_2_face_lg_lt_cc

Most cropped sections are available in larger images if you click on them and have great illusions viewed from a distance and different angles.

Old_man_profile_2_animal_faces_blue

The color change may help some see images better, though nothing beats time and patience.  If you right click for a larger view, besure to view from a bit of a distance.  Once you see an image suddenly emerge and come into clear focus you'll begin to understand the illusion created by Leonardo and it will begin to get easier for you to start SEEING MORE AND MORE!

Study_old_ma3_crp_animal_faces

This one requires a bit of time, but from this angle I see the heads of many different animals.  Do you? Right click for larger views.

Study_old_man_rot_blueWith so many images overlapping each other it makes it difficult to separate and outline all of them for you and besides I don't want to spoil all the fun of discovery.  It may take some practice, but depending on your time and patience level, there are still many more images for you to find hidden within this sketch.  Try coming back later and you'll see new images you hadn't noticed before!

Here are a few more rotated angles for you to try:

Old_man_5

Are you seeing them?

Old_man_lt

See the bunny rabbit?

Prof_of_an_old_man_sm_bunny_olImage of a rabbit outlined.

Right click on the link below for a much larger view of this drawing.  Try looking for all the images I've pointed out here.  As well as looking into the depth of the drawing.  You'll begin to see so many different recognizable images such as; eyes, numbers, letters and all the snakes!  And don't forget to try using a mirror set at a right angle to your computer screen to begin to see all the incredible illusions, of all the images, surrounding all those eyes!  Due to the large size of the sketch, found on the link below, BE SURE TO VIEW FROM A GOOD DISTANCE AWAY.

The Art of Illusion: Leonardo da Vinci

St_anne_3_rev SKETCH OF ST. ANNE:  Leonardo da Vinci

From the simple to the complex "art of illusion" Leonardo da Vinci seems to provide an endless source of skill and methods of hiding images throughout his art.  Let's start with a fun and simple illusion by simply flipping this sketch upside down.

St_anne_3_usd_eye_olSit back and stare at the area outlined in green.

St_anne_3_usd_small_2

The area outlined above becomes the eye of a man, looking to the left, with a white beard.  See him?

St_anne_3_usd_face_ol Face outlined.

St_anne_3_usd_crp_white_out Closer view with a white out effect:  Face of a man.

St_anne_3_bw_2Removing color may help some see better, but it's not necessary.

St_anne_3_bw_usd_eye_of_dear_ol_2Shifting my focus to the areas circled in green suddenly two eyes appear forming the face of an animal.  (A baby deer, perhaps?)

St_anne_3_usd_small_3Once you really grasp the concept of this illusion you should begin to see many other faces; human and animal, as well as numbers and letters.

For an amazing, though more complex illusion...

St_anne_3_usd_small_3If I may ask you to stand up in front of your computer screen about a yard/meter or further (think of this as the 6 O'clock position.)  Then if you'll simply position yourself at 7 o'clock and then 8 o'clock, staring dead center at this sketch as you move, you should see an amazing; yet, far more complex illusion take place.  (Outlined below.)  For anyone limited in mobility click on image for a smaller view.

St_anne_3_usd_ape_ol If you view from a distance and staring from an angle to the left of your computer screen (as described above) the areas outlined in green look like the eyes and mouth of what looks, to me, as the face of an APE.  There are several similar illusions within this sketch if you just give it some distance, try different angles and a little time and patience!

St_anne_3_usd_small_4The longer I stare at this sketch the more illusions of hidden faces, both animal and human, I begin to see.

St_anne_3 You may also notice simple, yet cleverly hidden mages of snakes within ST. ANNE'S head covering.

St_anne_3_lips_ol_2 If you stare at the area outlined in green you should begin to get the distinct impression of a large, full set of lips!  Then back away from your computer screen, as described above, trying different distances and angles.

St_anne_3_2Reverse image and remember to try standing to the right (4 o'clock position) and to the left (8 o'clock position) of your computer screen viewing from different  distances.

St_anne_3_bw_3Removing color may help.

St_anne_3_3Rotated left.

St_anne_3_4 Rotated right.  With the smaller views try simply moving your head to 8 o'clock and...  Well, I see another face or two!

St_anne_3_rot_right_face_ol_2Eyes and mouth outlined.  Looks like the face of a gorilla/ape and then it seems to morph into what looks like the head of a snake.

If you're not seeing anything, please take a look at some of the other examples given below.  If you're not on my main page click here:  www.n2davinciandbeyond.com/

DA VINCI ART OF ILLUSION: SECRETS TO SEEING HIDDEN IMAGES REVEALED!

STUDY SKETCHES:  LEONARDO DA VINCI

Horse_and_rider_bw_lg_3HORSE AND RIDER

LEONARDO, you magnificent genius!  How in the world did you do this?  This is a wonderful example as to why, when it comes to LEONARDO DA VINCI, you never stop looking or thinking that you've seen it all.  Or that you could ever discover something new or equally amazing as you think you have allready seen!  And when you're quite sure there's nothing there...  Look again!

You could call this illusion, "THE FADE IN" because that is exactly what it does!  It just... FADES IN!  Simply pick an area on the sketch above, sit back from your computer screen just a bit and stare at that area!  JUST KEEP STARING!

Horse_and_rider_bw_crp_cExample:   A close up of the upper right hand corner. Stare at the horse's eye, suddenly the distinct image of a left profile comes into focus, that seems to fade in from nowhere!  The entire sketch is covered in layer after layer of these hidden images.

Update November 2007:  I've received a number of emails saying you're having some trouble with this illusion.  Thanks for understanding I didn't want to spoil the "thrill of discovery."  But from the number of emails I've received I promise I'll actually outline some of the hidden images for you asap.  Thanks for the feed back and all of your kind comments.

Okay, as promised here are a few outlined examples and may it yet again be duely noted that I am an artist, but the old fashion kind leaving my graphic skills sadly lacking.

Horse_and_rider_crp_ol_face Left profile of face outlined.  A few more further down.

Horse_and_rider_bw_upd   The longer you stare at this sketch from different angles the greater the illusion becomes!  It's covered in hidden images of animal and human faces.  They appear in all shapes and sizes, with new amazing images appearing each time you adjust your focus or angle of viewing!  This is an incredibly simple yet, absolutely amazing illusion!  There seems to be no end to the images, I still find something new every single time I look at it!

Horse_and_rider_4_crp_rider_faceClose up of rider's head.  How many faces do you see?  I see at least 3.

Horse_and_rider_lg_head_of_ape_ol_2Large caricature profile of a gorillia's head.

Horse_and_rider_dkStaring at the horses nose, do you see the image of the gorillia outlined above?

Prof_big_nose_olThen by just tilting my head slightly to the left, I see the profile of a face with a long nose.

Horse_and_rider_bw_2Upside down view reveals even more hidden images!

Horse_and_rider_usd_ol_face_aLeft profile of a face outlined.  Are you beginning to grasp the concept?

If you're not seeing exactly what I'm describing, try backing away from the sketch and looking at it from different angles!  We tend to want to get closer to see something, but I find I see much more staring at it from a distance.  I also, highly recomment you try placing a mirror at a right angle to your computer screen and stare in the mirror at these different sketches or any of DA VINCI'S art work!  Anyone who's ever read or heard much at all about DA VINCI, knows he had a thing about mirrors.  I promise, once you really grasp the concept of this illusion, you won't believe the number of hidden images you'll find!  It just takes a little practise and you'll be experiencing this wonderful hidden world of LEONARDO DA VINCI.

Horse_and_rider_bw_3* Rotated.  Each new angle continues to reveal all new images!  If you click on image for a larger view, allow yourself plenty of distance!

Horse_and_rider_lg_face_ol_2Large smiling face outlined.

Horse_and_rider_bw_upd_2 Reverse image and try tilting your head to the left then the right and all new images slowly begin to reveal themselves.

Horse_and_rider_bw_4* Rotate again and the hidden images seem to never end!

Ready to try a few more?

THREE STUDY SKETCHES FOR THE LAST SUPPER

St_philip HEAD OF ST. PHILIP

The next 3 sketches have a similar, but slightly different illusion.  At first it doesn't look like you have much to work with; however, pick a spot where there seems to be nothing at all and just keep staring at it!  Slowly you'll begin to see faint images growing darker and clearer.

St_philip_right_profile_ol Right profile of a face outlined.

St_philip_2_crp_nothing *And just in case you need any help whatsoever, here is a close up of what seems to be nothing, just pick a spot and keep staring intently at it!  I think this effect is much easier to see in the smaller images, unless you're using a mirror, so if you click on an image for a larger view you really should stand a few feet away in order to see clearly all the images that will slowly begin to grow darker and clearer the longer you stare at it!  Slowly you'll begin to see distinct images ranging from animal and human faces, numbers, letters, symbols, etc.! (* Larger view available.)

Sketch_lg*Rotated close up view.  When images become more recognizable, try looking from slightly different angles, tilting your head from one side then the other and amazingly you'll see even more!  Remember, a mirror set to one side of your computer screen allows distance and different viewing angles, which may really help as well!

Study_for_the_head_of_bartholemew_2HEAD OF BARTHOLEMEW

Just keep staring!

Study_for_the_head_of_bartholemew_c*Rotated close up view.  Keep staring and trying different angles and distances.  This is so incredibly amazing!

Study_for_the_head_of_bartholemew_3*Another rotated close up view.  The longer you keep staring at an area, the darker and clearer an image becomes.

Head_judas HEAD OF JUDAS

Now this one gets a bit more complicated.  And may really try your patience as far as trying to grasp just what all these images are exactly!

Study_for_judas_snow_bmpI couldn't resist the urge to see if I could get a better view by making a few lighting adjustments.  However, it seems the more adjustments I make, the more bizarre the images become!

Study_for_judas_2_lt_revGiven enough viewing distance this angle reveals even more hidden images, though there's still something very disturbing about this sketch all together.  I wonder if that is indeed the exact emotion DA VINCI intended to evoke, from a sketch of Judas?

Study_for_the_kneeling_leda_lt_a_8 FOR THE KNEELING LEDA

If you've begun to grasp the concept of illusion being employed by DA VINCI, hopefully these examples will enable you to experience the many different variations and styles of images, which are hidden throughout his entire body of work.  As you make your way through my site, you'll discover that I examine many more techniques and equally amazing illusions.

Study_for_the_kneeling_leda_lt_a_9 Each and every angle continues to reveal countless new images!

Study_for_the_kneeling_leda_lt_a_10 Allow yourself a few moments to adjust to new angles, staring intently as the new images begin to reveal themselves.

Aaa Upside down view.  Don't forget to stare at what appears to be empty background space!  Amazingly, hidden images will begin to emerge!

Study_head_female_bw HEAD OF A YOUNG WOMAN

Each of these sketches share a very similar illusion, though each seems to have it's own unique quality.

Study_head_female_bw_lt_aUpside down view.

Study_head_female_bw_lt_a_2* Rotated view.  I've said before that I believe you could easily spend a life time and never quite find all that LEONARDO DA VINCI has left for us to discover!  Are you beginning to see what I mean?

If you're new to my site, this is an extremely easy illusion to begin with.  But, you may want to pace yourself!  There is no way you'll make it through my entire site in one sitting!  TIME, DISTANCE, ANGLES and PATIENCE are a must!  LEONARDO DA VINCI has employed a wide range of techniques and illusions in skillfully hiding countless images in every single work of art that I have seen so far!  Some of his techniques can seem impossible to see at first.  The very best advise, is just sit back and keep looking!  With most illusions I do attempt to point out, trace, outline and/or anything else I can do to help you see exactly what I'm talking about.  I had not intended on doing as much as I have, simply because I didn't want to spoil the thrill of discovery.  However, I found viewers were really having trouble seeing everything I was seeing.  But, I can assure you there is still so, so much more left for you to discover!  And please don't get discouraged if you don't see things immediately, because you just may discover that what was impossible for you to see this time, is suddenly crystal clear the next!

Drawing_for_virgin_of_the_rocksSTUDY OF THE HEAD OF A GIRL   (Believed to be for, VIRGIN OF THE ROCKS)

Even to the left of her where there seems to be nothing at all, given enough time, very distinct images begin to appear.  What has become known as the infamous "R" can be seen beginning at the top, of the back, of her head to her shoulders.

Study_of_the_head_of_a_girl_r_ol Letter "R" outlined.

Study_of_a_girl_bw

* Reversed view darkened.  Side angle view from a mirror helps a lot with these.  Just keep staring.

Study_of_a_girl_bw_rot_rev * Rotated.  Remember, distance, angles, time and patience.

Study_of_a_girl_bw_upside_down * Upside down.

It is really amazing that something so simple could in fact hold such an incredible secret for so long!

DA VINCI AND THE ART OF ILLUSION: STUDY SHEET

Ss_profile_of_woman_face_leftStudy Sheet:  PROFILE OF A WOMAN FACING LEFT  LEONARDO DA VINCI

There are just so many different hidden images that immediately jump out at me it's hard to decide where to start!  So sit back and let's start with the larger images first.

Ss_prof_woman_2_rt_prof_ol Right profile outlined.

Ss_prof_4_crp_lg_face_rt_prof_hairRight profile of a face staring right at you.  Look long enough and the face begins to take on slightly different shapes.

Ss_prof_4_crp_rot_dk_a Flip the image upside down and darken lighting and all new images begin to appear!

Ss_prof_4_crp_rot_dk_a_2 Rotate again and more images appear in the background.

Ss_prof_woman_lt_prof_ol_2 Left profile, eye and mouth outlined.

Ss_prof_3_crp_face_in_hair_3 Left profile.

Ss_prof_woman_lt_profSame image rotated.

Ss_prof_woman_rt_prof_ol Wider view of the same area reveals a partial right profile, eye and mouth outlined.

Ss_prof_right_prf Right profile.  However, seen up close your focus is probably on the last image we just looked at.  You have to view from a distance and focus on the left hand corner where I've outlined the eye.  As you'll begin to realize there are just so many overlapping images in this single drawing it can become very confusing!  The images form and then slowly emerge into another image then another.  If you're thinking I'm spoiling all the fun by outlining a few of the vast hidden images I can assure you that is not the cast!  Everyone sees things alittle differently.  You many be seeing some of the many other hidden images.  But I find this takes a bit of practice and I want to make sure I convince you that these are not flukes or common anomalies, but are in fact easily found in every single drawing, sketch and/or painting by LEONARDO DA VINCI, as you'll see if you ever have enough time to go through my entire site and photo albums!

Ss_prof_woman_sm_rt_prof_olA smaller right profile with eye and large grin outlined.

Ss_prof_woman_sm_rt_prof_crpNotice what looks like a long pointed nose of beak.  However...

Ss_prof_woman_sm_rt_prof_crp_2_2...the closer you get the more confusing it becomes because you begin to notice so many other smaller images!  Right click on any image for a larger view and you'll see what I mean!

Ss_prof_woman_face_crp_olRotate and all new images begin to take shape.  Here I've outlined a partia face.

Ss_prof_woman_lt_prof_aaa Closer view and many images emerge, but the one we're looking at first is...

Ss_prof_woman_lt_prof_aa ...this partial face!

Ss_prof_woman_lt_prof_bbRotated with lighting enhanced profile outlined.

Ss_prof_woman_lt_prof_bbbWithout outlining.

Ss_prof_woman_lt_prof_bbbbAnd a wider view of the same area (look for the eyes across the top) an animals face!  Are you beginning to see what I mean?  The hidden images are EVERYWHERE!

I've mentioned in previous blogs that my personal obsession began with the MONA LISA and her ever changing face and all the eyes that seemed to cover every square inch of that painting.  And it's true for most of LEONARDO'S art, I seem to notice eyes first and in the most unusual places. But it wasn't until I sat back and viewed from a distance that all the images surrounding all these eyes came into focus!  So when I say sit back, view from a distance and forget what you're suppose to see, I really mean it!  And hopefully all these incredible hidden images will begin to come into focus for you too!  All you need is a little time and patience!

Ss_prof_6_rot_color_lt_2Wider view with color enhanced.  Give it time.  New images begin to appear with each rotation.

Ss_prof_6_rot_color_lt_3Rotated reversed image.

Ss_profile_of_woman_face_left_2Lighting enhanced.

Do you see the large number 3?  Remember to put some distance between you and the larger cropped sections.

Ss_prof_5_lt_aaReversed upside down.  Right click for larger views.

Ss_left_profile_lt_c Snake on the top of her head.

As you move in for a closer look it seems there is no end to the vast number of hidden images overlapping each other.  Slowly new images begin to emerge one after the other.  This is so incredibly amazing!

Ss_prof_face_crpSee the two eyes at the top as if looking to the right.

Ss_left_profile_crp_lt_animal_faceTry tilting your head to one side then the other.

Ss_prof_3_crp_faces

Ss_profile_of_woman_face_left Reversed upside down.

Ss_profile_of_woman_face_left_colorWith color and lighting enhanced

Ss_prof_woman_rot_lt_a Rotated with slight lighting enhanced.

Ss_prof_woman By merely reversing, it seems more and more hidden images appear!  Are you seeing them?

And when you're sure you've seen everything, come back later and you'll see many new images you hadn't noticed before!

How many more images can you spot?

If you're still having trouble seeing all the hidden images, let me try something different.

Laughing_man_2_ape_ol With color restored I've outlined the face of a gorilla.

Laughing_man_2_ape_boFace of gorilla.  Close up view and I've blacked out the rest of the drawing so as not to confuse you with all the other over lapping images.

Caricature_woman_wearing_henningWOMAN WEARING HENNING:

Right click on images for larger views.  Even with no enhancements what so ever the faces literally seem to jump off the screen!  I hate to spoil all the fun by pointing out all the hidden images.  Are you starting to see them on your own?

Woman_wearing_henning_crp Try looking at one section at a time.  From a distance or close up, given enough time you should start seeing a wide variety of images.  Do you see the left profile of a face at the top of her hat?  And just below that is a larger left profile.  Try tilting her head from one side, then the other side.  Sit back and view it from a distance.  The images seem to form and fade from one image into another image!  Come back later and you'll see new images you hadn't notice before!

What amazes me most is how all these images and illusions have gone unnoticed until now!  And may I once again assure you that every single drawing, sketch, painting, etc. by LEONARDO DA VINCI hold a seemingly endless array of hidden images!  All it takes is a little time and patience before you begin to spot them on your own!

Caricature_woman_wearing_henning_2 Rotate.  Is that a left profile of a dinosaur's head?  Keep looking there's more!

Caricature_woman_wearing_henning_3 Rotated, reverse image.  WOW!  All new images!  Isn't this fun?

Caricature_woman_wearing_henning_ro Rotate again and oh yea, try adjusting lighting and even more images appear!  I hate to spoil all the fun by outlining the images for you; are you seeing them on your own?

DA VINCI'S "MADONNA OF THE ROCKS" AND HIDDEN IMAGES.

Madonna_of_the_rocks_slightly_croppedMADONNA OF THE ROCKS:  LEONARDO DA VINCI

As I've discussed in a previous blog, DA VINCI well known for his mirror style of writing, requiring that you hold his manuscript up in front of a mirror in order to decipher the writing, isn't it logical to wonder if he could have applied this unique ability to a few of his paintings?  The "Madonna of the Rocks" not to be confused with, "Virgin of the Rocks", Louvre Paris.  In the following view I flipped the painting upside down.  Am I alone in what I see?

Madonna_of_the_rocks_flip_lgI've slightly cropped this image which enabled me to show it larger and slightly adjusted lighting.

Madonnarocks_flp_cropped_face_red_lipsCropped and shown close up.  Does anyone else see what appears to be the partial face of a woman with bright red lips?

Madonna_outlined_part_face Partial face outline in green.

Madonna_of_the_rocks_face_2And shown here up right in reverse image with slight lighting enhancement.

Madonna_outlined_profile_2Profile of face outlined in green.

Madonna_of_the_rocks_face_2_croppedShown close up.  Profile of a woman with red lips, facing left?

Madonnarocks_black_out_infantWith infant removed.

As I've stated in earlier posts the view is in the eye of the beholder!  If you do see what I see, the question is;  Did da Vinci intend to hide images within his work?  Or, are these simply quirks?  Could you get the same results with any painting, photo, etc.?  Do a couple of images like this prove of anything?  No!  But with the consistentcy of painting after painting, drawing after drawing and every single work of art even manuscripts of LEONARDO DA VINCI revealing hidden images after hidden images, I say this is no coincidence, nor quirk!  And by the way there are many more images hiding in this painting!  Can you spot them?

Madonna_of_the_rocks   Try placing a mirror at a right angle to your computer screen, which allows distance and different viewing angles.  Anyone who's ever heard much about DA VINCI knows he had a thing about mirrors.

Sit back from your computer a bit and forget what you're suppose to see.  The area outlined, do you see the left profile of a woman's face?  It has the appearance of an Egyptian goddess.

Click on image for a larger view, but you'll have to stand back from your computer screen a few feet and don't forget to view from different angles, with or without use of a mirror.

Keep staring at the larger images of this painting, trying different angles and distances.  This is one of the more difficult illusions of Leonardo da Vinci's, if you're just not seeing it, leave it, come back later.  There is no way you're going to see everything the first time.  There are many more illusions to show you and if you're new to my site, please take it one step, one illusion at a time.  (Portions of MADONNA LITTA republished from archives.)

Madonna_with_the_spindle_2MADONNA OF THE YARNWINDER:  Leonardo da Vinci Sometimes called MADONNA WITH A SPINDLE

If you're new to my site allow me to let you in on the secret.  Every single work of art, that I have seen, of LEONARDO DA VINCI'S has an incredible illusion of countless hidden images.  The secret to seeing them is by looking in a slightly different way than we're accustom to viewing works of art.  Mainly from a distance and from different angles.  It really is that simple.  Let's face it, to see something or to find "the hidden images" we tend to get closer and closer, don't we?  And though it's true you will find many different additional layers of hidden images throughout DA VINCI'S art the closer you examine it; however, in doing so we've missed the most amazing illusions I have ever seen in my life.  Let's take a step back from this painting and I'll show you what I mean.

Depending on the condition of your vision, you may need to actually stand up and view this painting from a few feet away.  Or you can try placing a mirror at a right angle on either side of your computer screen, which will provide different viewing angles as well as some distance.  As to the distance, that's something you'll have to experiment with, to find what works best for you.  Remember, DA VINCI had a real thing about mirrors.  His mirror style of handwriting, which required you to hold it up in front of a mirror to decipher his writing.  However, it's not just a matter of reversing the image, but changing your viewing perspective, i.e., the actual angle from which you're viewing.  I find it extremely interesting that in just about every work of art of DA VINCI'S you'll find at least one very distinct "arrow."  I've theorized that perhaps DA VINCI was directing us to view that work of art from that side or angle.  The only problem with that is, no matter what angle you view his works of art, you find hidden images from any and all angels!  Anyway, here's an example:

Madonna_with_the_spindle_lt_a_rev_2Reversed with lighting enhanced.  If you're not using a mirror as described above, you must allow yourself some distance, so I recommend standing a few feet from your computer screen to see this illusion.  And don't forget to view from different angles as well.

Click on images for larger views if you need to, but be sure to allow yourself plenty of viewing distance.

Madonna_with_the_spindle_face_olFace outlined.

Madonna_with_the_spindle_ape_olProfile of ape outlined.

Hopefully you've been able to glimpse just one of these illusions clearly, enough to realize this is not a mere fluke or common anomaly occurring here.  If not, I encourage you to keep looking.

N 2 DA VINCI AND BEYOND...

June 19, 2007

WHY IS MONA LISA SMILING? BECAUSE SHE'S NOT ALONE IN THAT PAINTING!

http://www.n2davinciandbeyond.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2007/05/21/mona_lisa_louvre.jpg MONA LISA:  Leonardo da Vinci  Louvre-Paris

Throughout my blogs on the hidden images found within the art work of LEONARDO DA VINCI, I've stated that modern technology, i.e. lighting, contrasting, etc., is not necessary to see these amazing hidden images!  However, in an effort to better enable skeptics a helping hand in experiencing what I refer to as the "Hologram Effect" I have utilized such technology to assist you in seeing all that I am seeing.

Mona_lisa_crp_olNotice the area outlined and seen up close in the next image.

Mona_lisa_crp_apeWith slight lighting enhancements I begin to see distinct images taking shape.  Do you?

Mona_lisa_crp_ape_bwHow about with color removed?

Of all the amazing discoveries I've made of countless hidden images and various illusions skillfully mastered by Leonardo da Vinci, this is by far the most difficult to try and capture exactly what I'm seeing.  However, in my continuing quest to convince the world that MONA LISA is not alone in this painting allow me to first point out the seemingly endless number of eyes I have found on almost every square inch of this painting!

http://www.n2davinciandbeyond.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/mona_crp_eye_dk.jpgI've made lighting enhancements to most of these images.  If you're not seeing anything try adjusting your monitor's contrast and bright settings.

http://www.n2davinciandbeyond.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2007/05/21/mona_detail_lt_flp_ll.jpg   These are only a few examples!  Now it's just a matter of connecting all these eyes with the hidden images surrounding them!  However, when I tell you that the images surrounding all of these eyes just happens to be mostly of Gorillas and Snakes...  Of course you're going to laugh!  Believe me I haven't been able to stop laughing since I first realized what I was seeing.  And seeing them best with the naked eye, using art books, flipping them around from all angles, tilting them back and forth just as you would any basic flip-flop hologram; using and observing the play of light to try and glimpse all of these hidden images.  Capturing exactly what I see has not been easy, but I'm sure trying!

Mona_lisa_5   With the help of a few friends who, I've discussed previously had been planning an intervention on my behalf, I discovered that the use of a mirror placed at a right angle to their computer screens enabled them to finally catch a glimpse of what I'm seeing.  And let's face it, if you've ever read or even heard much at all about DA VINCI, you know he had a thing about mirrors.  I would also discover that the use of a laptop's computer screen captures the "hologram effect" beautifully with many of DA VINCI'S illusions, so if you're using a laptop try moving your screen up and down, side to side as you would any basic flip-flop hologram.

Mona_lisa_2_lt_a_2

As to the exact angle and distance you place a mirror to the left or right side of your computer screen, of course has a lot to do with the condition of your own personal vision.  You're going to have to experiement as to what works best for you.  But again let me stress that it is more of a right angle that captures this amazing illusion, NOT just reversing the image as if you were holding it up in front of a mirror, which frankly does give you some interesting results.  But for so many of the illusions I am desperately trying to help you see throughout my site, IT'S FROM A SIDE ANGLE!  And I'm sorry, but as you've no doubt notice throughout my site, I've tried all sorts of things desperately trying to enable you to see all that I'm seeing and if you still are not grasping what I'm talking about, I'M BEGGING YOU TO TRY A MIRROR PLACED AT A BIT OF A RIGHT ANGLE TO YOUR COMPUTER SCREEN!!

I'm sorry, didn't mean to scream!  It's just that I am so desperate to share this amazing discovery with the world.  Below are many examples of many different hidden images I've tried to capture for you.  Please, just give it a try.

http://www.n2davinciandbeyond.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2007/07/29/snake_outlined_2.jpg Here's one outlined in green, but keep looking there are more!  Again, you may have to adjust your monitor's settings if you just don't see anything.  And of course, Time and Patience!

Mona_lisa_ape_right_ol Viewed in the right light the image outlined has the illusion of a face.  Keep the "hologram effect" in mind.  Depending on lighting and/or the angle you view this painting from new images become more and more distinct.

DA VINCI: "Virgin of the Rocks" REVEALS HIDDEN MASKED/SCARY FACE!

Virgin_of_the_rocks_bw VIRGIN OF THE ROCKS:  LEONARDO DA VINCI  National Gallery-London (black and white)

My very first blog, back on November 28, 2006, began with my discovery of the "Masked Face!"  Or "Scary Face" depending on the positive or negative image as seen in the following two cropped images:  Virgin_of_the_rocks_bw_mask_crp

Reversed, upside down with slight lighting enhancement a cropped section reveals the image of a masked face.  Right click on images for larger views.

Masked_face_outlined Masked face outlined in green.

Virgin_of_the_rocks_bw_scary_face Negative image seems to unmask what looks like a "scary face!"

Scary_face_outlined_2 Scary face outlined in green.

And with these two images My Blog began!  I said I would be returning to this painting; specifically this black and white view of the painting, but it seems I got a bit side tracked!  Well, I came across my files of the many other images this painting holds within it's shadows and here are a few:

Virgin_of_the_rocks_bw_ltReversed image with lighting enhanced (I recommend viewing first from a distance and from different angles in order to see the larger "illusions" of hidden images.)  What else do you see?

Virgin_of_the_rocks_2_crp_lt    Suffice it to say, there seems to be no end of the vast number of images to be found in this painting.  Again I shall say, yes common anomalies can be found anywhere!  Yet it is the consistency of these images, faces, numbers, letters that are simply too...consistent to be coincidental!!

There are still far more images I've left for you to discover on your own.  What else do you see?

Here are a few hidden images I found utilizing mere color enhancement, lighting, etc.

Virginrocks_2_croppedCropped and color enhanced image found on the lap of the Virgin Mary.  What looks like the number 2. The longer I look at this, what I see seems to change.  Letter "F."  Or a symbol of some sort?  Is it just an optical illusion?  Was it done intentionally?

Virginrocks_2_cropped_flipReverse image gives a entirely different perceptive and I also notice what looks like additional letters.  What appears to be an upside down "P."

Virgin_bbc_crop_lt_2 Another, with lighting enhanced.

Virgin_bbc_crop_lt_4 And another.

As I've continued to state throughout my blogs my biggest question for anyone else seeing "more than first meets the eye" is, could these images be accidental?  I find this extremely hard to believe. So, if Leonardo was intentionally encrypting images, symbols, etc., what is trying to tell us?  We must remember the day and time in which he lived.  People were literally put to death for voicing their opinions, thoughts or even for daring to question main stream beliefs.  In exploring these consistent hidden images I cannot help but wonder;  What was Leonardo da Vinci willing to risk his life, if discovered, to tell us?  Is there something he felt so passionate about that he would go to such lengths in order that some message could be uncovered?  If so, I wonder if he would have imagined it would take 500 years for us to find the messages, yet a lone begin to try and understand what they could possibly mean?

THE ILLUSIONS WITHIN LEONARDO DA VINCI'S DRAWINGS

Study_matthew STUDY FOR ST. MATTHEW:  LEONARDO DA VINCI

Matthew_lt_aa Do you see the face of an animal within his beard?

Virgin_and_child_with_cat_leo Virgin and Child with cat:  sketch by LEONARDO DA VINCI

Time and patience! If you stare at da Vinci's works of art without thought of the title and merely allow yourself to see what you will see, you will begin to see many other hidden images.

Virgin_and_child_with_cat_leo_lt_a With color removed and lighting enhanced the Virgin, Child and cat are a bit more distinct, but if you sit back and stare at the drawing...   What else do you see?

Virgin_outlined_aJust one of the many hidden images outlined in green.

Virgin_and_child_with_cat_rot_no__3 Rotate and new hidden images begin to emerge.  Once again I see what is becoming to be known on my site as the "infamous letter "R" found time and again hidden within so many of Leonardo da Vinci's works of art.  Do you see it?

Virgin_child_with_cat_rot_crp_r Close up of the letter "R" from the rotated view shown above.

Interesting note:   If you check my archive article on the SHROUD OF TURIN you'll even discover what appears as a very distinct letter "R" at the entry wound on the back of Christ's wrist.  (Shown below.)

Shroud2_a_1

Partial image of the "SHROUD OF TURIN" notice the dark spot on the back of the wrist.  (Shown close up below.)

Shroud2_a_crop_lg_r_1

Shown close up it looks like the letter "R".  And look long enough and the same illusion seen throughout DA VINCI'S art begins to occur as images of eyes and letters begin to take shape.  Notice the white "S" in the lower right corner.

Shroud_of_turin_crp_r_rot Same image rotated.

But for now back to the drawing of "THE VIRGIN AND ST. ANNE..."  Virgin_and_child_with_cat_rot_no__4 A closer look at another possible hidden image seems to look like the face of a gorilla.

Virgin_and_child_with_cat_no_color_ Another cropped section.  The images are so vast it's difficult to separate them at first, but if you'll stare intently the individual shapes new images slowly begin to emerge!

Virgin_and_child_with_cat_rot_crp_e And another cropped section.

The "HOLOGRAM EFFECT" I refer to throughout my site is still perhaps the best description for what Leonardo da Vinci has done.  Hiding layer upon layer of images, numbers, letters and symbols.  I believe we could spend a life time and never discover all that da Vinci has left for us to see.  Understanding any possible meaning he intended to pass on could take several life times!

Again, I ask that you simply give it time.

Young_woman_no_color_lt_aa With color removed and lighting enhanced.

Do you see the letter "R"?  I see several!  As well as a seemingly endless array of images.

Fish_bw Cropped section rotated.  Of the endless images within this drawing, this is one of my favorite.  It looks like a large fish or shark with it's mouth opened pointing to the right.

If you just give it time the images begin to appear all over this drawing.  Eyes everywhere, numbers, faces...  Notice the large number 3 in the upper left hand corner.  Try tilting your head to one side, then to the other side.
